Default Digi 002 Kernel Task Issue

Hello everyone,

This is my first post and forgive me if it's a repost but I am having issues with my Digi 002 interface and the kernel task which makes working on large post production sessions impossible. Alright so the problem is everytime the interface is plugged in and on, the kernel task shoots from almost no cpu usage to over 100% and causes pro tools to give me the cpu overload message on the highest buffer setting. I have tried swapping the digi out with a saffire pro 40 and the saffire runs fine and doesn't affect the kernel task hardly at all. I have the 11.0.0 drivers installed for the digi and 16gb of ram. Any ideas as to where I can start? Also i've tried resetting all the smc and pram stuff so that's not it.

Hi,

I had the same issue with a 003 rack, it comes from the drivers. I solved it by uninstalling 11.x.x drivers and installing the latest v10 drivers. I can't run PT 11 with this workaround, only PT 10 is supported. And no Core Audio.

What are your system specs ? I have a 2011 MBP 13 inch with a 2.8ghz i7 and 8gb ram on OS X 10.8.5

I wonder if the 11.1.3 drivers released yesterday fix this annoying issue. Has anyone tried yet ?

Edit : I've tried the new 11.1.3 driver and the issue remains. Just plugging the 003 taxes 70% of one core on my system It's a shame, come on Avid, why don't you fix this ??

Has there been any progress with this? It doesn't kill me because my Mac Pro has 16 cores but y'know, it'd be REALLY FREAKING NICE IF YOU PEOPLE FIX YOUR CRAPPY SOFTWARE TO WORK CORRECTLY FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIVES!!!

I JUST WANT A FREAKING DRIVER SO I CAN RUN MY COPY OF PRO TOOLS 8 ON MY MAC PRO WITH OS X 10.8.5 AND MY 002 RACK. WHAT IN THE CHRIST IS YOU IDIOTS' PROBLEM.

IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO FIX YOUR DAMN DRIVERS AT LEAST MAKE THEM OPEN SOURCE SO THAT ACTUALLY INTELLIGENT PEOPLE CAN FIX IT OURSELVES.

Not everyone can afford to just go out and buy a new audio interface every three or four years whenever you decide to stop supporting it or constantly pay to update to the newer version of Pro Tools which does not have any features that I need.

Why can't you just support your customers? Why is that so much to ask? I have no problem using my MOTU 828 *FROM THE 1990'S* on all of my systems.

Seriously, with the knowledge that you don't support your customers and you leave things like this broken forever, why in the world would I ever buy an Avid product of any kind, ever? Supposing I get approved for my business loan to build a production studio, you think I'm going with Avid *anything*? Hell no!

I've determined the cause of this issue. It's due to the MIDI drivers.

To solve this problem go to /Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers and remove the file, "Avid 002 and 003 Family.plugin". This is what is taking up so much processor, for whatever reason.

Amazing, it took me exactly 15 minutes to figure this out. Yet in however many months, the people who wrote this software can't be asked to debug it. Pathetic.

Can anyone else confirmed this worked? I think I tried it but kernel task kept spiking.

This is extremely interesting!!!
Simon, are you saying that you tried this but you're still getting CPU spikes?
You say you think you tried this -- but you're not sure if you did??

Also, for anyone else who has tried this, are you saying that the 002 works fine with PT 11 WITHOUT a huge kernel task after removing the specified file?

If so, this must mean that the MIDI ports on the back of the 002 no longer work...correct?

I want to try this myself, but I'd really like to see if anyone else can confirm this "fix" first.
Thank you

I just tried this. For me it is only called Avid 003 Family.plugin. However this did NOT work.
Same enormous kernel task in activity monitor as always when using the 002 as the playback engine in Pro Tools

I'm 98% sure I tried this and got the cpu spike. Also, I do not use PT. I'm just using my 002r as an interface for Logic/Ableton on my MBP late 2011 model running OS X 10.10.1 w/ 16GB RAM.

Right. Using PT is not necessary to see the spike in CPU activity which causes fans to kick into jet-engine overdrive on almost all Macs I've seen. All that is necessary is to use this driver with the 002/003 models and any software -- even the OS X system output and/or iTunes and you'll see the kernel task in Activity Monitor almost immediately after hitting play in iTunes.
This trashing of the midi device advice does absolutely nothing except probably disable the interface's midi ports.
