Rope77,

Check out the "compatibility" section. That will answer most of your questions. Good luck! Make lots of music.

For the 001 you may be fine using a 7200rpm Seagate Barracuda, but for a few more $$ the 10,000rpm Seagate Cheetahs are excellent (9 or 18 or ?? Gigs)… both are Digi recommended. For good deals & in-stock, you might try MegaHaus 800/786-1184.

Warmest Regards,
Brian

I'm using an Atlas IV internally with a epci-ul2s on a G4/400 with Mix 24 and it is great, very fast Ultra 2 and still good with a cd burner on external port shifting it into UW mode. Only thing that sucks is VHD connecter, too flimsy. Waiting for a new cable because Granite Digital adapter failed.

Is there any advantage to using an internal drive as to a external, i.e. Glyph. Or is it just marketing? I have the space for an internal drive.

IMHO the externals have the advantage, as they can be removable. I took mine across country for overdubs on a project — just rented a system, slid 'em in the trays & started cutting on sessions I'd already prepped. I've also rented extra drive carts when I've had one-day projects crop up while my drives are loaded up with a long-term gig. Flexibility can mean filling the "orphaned" days on your calender! Do that two or three times and you've already paid for the removable chassis!

Warmest Regards,
Brian

The Glyph hotswap 18 gig's are what I use and I love them... You'd better get a soundproof box for them though 'coz they wail!!!
Also Glyph are the greatest at service and support - I had an older drive go down and they were able to get it fixed and I had it back in two days (another reason to get hotswaps and just switch 'em out with no downtime)

Is it really worth spending the extra cash on something like a glyph rather than just getting the same Cheetah or Barracuda drive in a generic external case? What do they do that is different? Do they perform that much better?

If you have the opportunity to pick up an extra couple days of work, or move sessions between studios that have PT rigs with removable drive bays, or as Sndguy says, have a problem down the road with a drive mechanism going out, the benefit of hot swap's flexibility will IMMEDIATELY become apparent to you.

If, on the other hand, you work in one location with a civil and casual schedule, you may indeed not see the benefits to warrant the additional cost. Carefully consider your own situation before making your investment… all I can say is I wouldn't be without them!

Warmest Regards,
Brian
