Default QT Video Playback Delay, Seriously?

Hi guys,

I've just upgraded a big leap from PT 10.3.10 on Snow Leopard to PT 12.5.2 on Mavericks (10.9.).

Annoying Issue: With Video Online, Playback start delay is aprox 0,5 sec. (settings in prefs are smallest, h.264, dnxhd or prores as well, delay occurs out of blackmagic intensity pro AND on native monitor too, so bm shouldn't be the culprit)

With video clicked offline playback starts immediately.

In PT 10 it was ALWAYS that snappy regardless of video online or not.

Is it that I have to stay at 10 because Avid screwed the video engine up?

I mean I want to work fast, and this delay drives me mental.

(Make the maths: with daily 3000 times of hitting play (which can easily happen when editing I suppose) it is 25 minutes lost to total annoyance and agony A DAY.

Things are supposed to improve when upgrading, right?

Very sad. Any ideas? Thank you

10.9.5 2x2.66 6Core, 32GB

I should add that on a 10.11.5 Mac Mini 2,5 i5, 16GB, PT 12.4.0 the playback start delay is about 0.3 seconds with video online which isn't still as snappy as on the old 10er machine but it starts to get bearable.

But why is it then faster on the mini than on the powerhouse MacPro?

I've always had more of a delay with V11+ than 10. It's not a huge deal when mixing but when I'm editing it is extremely annoying. If I had a guess I'd say it's because the video engine is running as a separate process and communicating as a client-server relationship with PT.

Out of curiosity does your Mac Mini have a video peripheral? Could be a tiny bit quicker if not. I think when I'm working on my laptop it is snappier.

Yes, the Mac mini is as it is. No Video peripheral.
But on the MP it is the same when video is on the desktop, and not out of intensity pro.

Hi Nick

I am in the same boat. We have here three systems.
We never got video running professional using blackmagic and desktop video. I also cant live with this playback delay on all systems.

So we are stll working on 10.3.10 on all machines.
But I did not try 12.5.2. I have no time for testing now.

If we dont get this working we maybe let our HD plans expire.

Alex

Thanks for your replies. That confirms a lot for me.

I've set up a ML 10.8.5 with PT 10.3.10 + PT 12.4.0 coinstall now.
(last supported combo)

The playback start delay in 12.4 is as was expected around 0.5 sec.
Launching the same session in 10, and video is as responsive as lightning.

For most of the time i will have to go with 10 then.
Very sad..AVID, very sad :-(

For me personally there is no way I'd go back to 10. There have been so many other improvements that I live with this stupid delay. With the hope that they can improve it.

1/2 second delay has been there with sync'd Avid interfaces since AVoption, no matter which computer or OS. The extra time allows for better sync accuracy between audio and video. Doubt it will be improved anytime soon, liveable trade-off.

Sometimes I turn off video while editing things that don't need picture, like pre-placed narration.

Agreed about 10, don't want to go back.

Thanks. Taking video offline for smoother editing is an interesting option. For an industry standard and alleged top notch post DAW it is such a ridiculous suggestion that I didn't even get the idea. It's an effective as simple trick though! However... well u know.
I can faintly hear the distant Ghosts of Nuendo whispering again.
If only audio would start in an instant having video sync fixed in the background meanwhile and then drop in with perfect sync half a second later.. that would be tolerable

Arrow Re: QT Video Playback Delay, Seriously?

This is the way it is. When I upgraded the first of my employer's systems to v11.3.1, the operator had this complaint. He was using a MacPro4,1 (Nehalem 2009, 2.92 GHz 8-core). I swapped out his computer for a MacPro5,1 (Westmere 2010, 2.66 GHz 12-core). While the delay did not go away entirely, it improved enough that this person stopped complaining about it.

I have found that some people encounter this delay and say "This is lame." Others have said, "Eh, no big deal." The rest have said "Really? I didn't notice." It all depends on how you work, what your setup is, etc.

If you have an active support plan, feel free to log a case with Avid about this. While they will not be able to offer you a short term fix, please remember that the more complaints they have about any issue, the more likely they are to try and do something about it.

If you are going to open a support case with Avid, feel free to reference PT-200748 (if using Blackmagic for playback).
