Default Re: Best Compressor to replace RNCs

I think the problem I ran into was because I used a balanced cable out of the RNC. Can't I just got get two UNBALANCED 1/4 inch to XLR cables and run it that way? Or will I be facing the same issue of getting audio only on one side....?

That is exactly what you want to do, and what I escribed in my previous post. Simply go unbalanced in/out of the RNC, and keep unbalanced cable run under 15 feet and you'll be fine. Make sure your unbalanced cabling is wired to the appropriate hot pin for your preamp(inotherwords check to see if it is pin 2 or pin 3 hot.)

Learn to solder, you'll make cables for 1/4 the price that'll be 10x better quality than anything you'll be getting at GC. Certainly don't buy into that Monster hype, their cable manufacturing is some of the worst out there.

It's simple to learn, and once you get the feel, you'll be making cables like a pro. commecially made cables are made to such poor quality standards, you really are better off making your own.

There are some good articles at the Studio Covers Archive

especially an article about halfway down called Making Your Own Cables.

Check it out.

Hi!
The cables suggestion is the best one, RNC is a fluke, price-wise. Should be 5-6 times that price easily.

One HUGE caveat: Check the manual for the gear you are connecting among. I mention this because some gear will NOT take kindly to the neutral ("cold," usually Pin 3/Ring; check equip specs of course) and grnd being combined, while others could care less.
A proper balanced->unbalanced device is the *best* solution, but other times simply using a TRS 1/4" with the Ring connection left unconnected (vs using a TS 1/4" with "cold" and "grnd" combined), or a TS 1/4" with the "Cold" left unconnected (be sure to isolate/insulate of course ) will do.

Well I called and emailed UA and even the tech that they have didn't know what to tell me about this. Im going to try to make my own cables in a few different configurations and hopefully one will work.
