Default Using eleven rack with another interface

So I've tried everything I could find online and I stall can't make my eleven rack work with my Scarlett 18i8 on pro tools. The ER works fine on it's own, however I don't wanna be switching interfaces everytime I need to record something different.

I hooked up the ER to my 18i8 through the S/PDIF. The ER Clock is set to external. On the Mix control for the Scarlett I set the S/PDIF inputs for left and right.
I've tried getting sound from the ER as an insert>io>spdif but the plug in becomes inactive as soon as I set it up giving the message 'The insert was made inactive because the output path is already in use'
I've also tried setting the input of the audio track to SPDIF.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong and I could use some help :)

Page 69 or so of the user manual. Make sure your rig output is set to digital

I've used the Eleven Rack as a secondary interface on a system with a 003 as the main interface, and am using it as a secondary interface on a Mac Pro with a 96 I/O (HD Accel). Allows me to easily select different sources within PT. Just need to make sure it's set up correctly, so check out Benoni's video at https://youtu.be/W0DRUGqfQ8o for an overview.
