Default Need Graphics Card recommendation

Hello all. I currently am running PT12 on an early 2009 mac pro. Everything runs smooth except my graphics. They seem sluggish when I use the selector tool. I have to run Quartz debug to resolve the issue. It has been said that my GT120 is long overdue for an upgrade. So this leaves me to 2 questions.

1. Will this fix my issue?
2. Which graphics card do you recommend to replace?

rock on

Mac's are very limited in the Graphics Card department...
#1. You need a Mac version...
Comes with EFI in the video card.
#2. All AMD HD69xx, have that EFI except the 6970 & 6990.
#3. All AMD HD69xx need Lion drivers, except 6990.
#4. HD5770 & HD5870 are compatible with Snow Leopard...
#5. AMD FirePro D300, D500 & D700 needs more than Lion.

I am currently running 10.10.5. I have heard great things about the Gtx660. Anyone tried it? I honestly don't need anything fancy. Its only for protools. No gaming. There's so many cards out there I have no idea where to begin! Looking to spend around 100.

I agree with Juan, you have to be careful which one you purchase.

I ended up getting a GTX 760 or 770 I can't remember.

The nvidia website tells you whether or not it's Mac compatible, and that's natively no drivers required.

So your going to have to do a bit of reading on faire ole Google, but you should be able to find one at the price you like

I put the Hackintosh install of Yosemite on my old Mac Pro. It loaded fine, but the graphics were toast.

I think my machine is a 2007.

I bought a Mac Pro ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB PCIe card from China for $100, maxed out the RAM and changed the processors to faster Xenon models.

For about $300 my machine is running 12.4 HD like a champ.

Before I put the card in I was getting crashes, the graphics were all messed up and the windows for plugins wouldn't load. Now it's 100% perfect.

What is an EFI? Do I need one? Sorry but this is such a gray area for me. Thanks in advance for the recommendations.
