Power Book G4 1.5 and Digi 002 Live Recording

Hello all

I am considering investing in a mobile protools rig that I can use for Live recordings. I currently use a Roland 2480. I noticed that the g4 powerbooks are not that expensive. I was wondering if getting a (g4 1.5 or 1.67 gig powerbook and linking it up with a 002 and digimax) would be a good choice for recording live.

Would the system be stable enough to record 16 tracks at the same time. I would mix on another system. I like recording on the 2480 but when it comes to mixing and editing pro tools can't be beat.

What do you think, any suggestions?

I do a lot of remote live recording and have stopped taking Pro Tools out into the field. I got royally #^^*'ed a few times and can't take the chance any more. What I would recommend is something like the Alesis HD24, which will give you better track count anyway and provides for a fairly seamless transfer of tracks to you mix system. If you do take Pro Tools out bring a back up system just in case....

Frienddragon thanks for the reply, I am definately going to do some research on the Alesis HD24. I used to be a fan of the ADATs back in the day.

I use a Powerbook G4 1.67 with a 002r and a focusrite octopre into the adat and have no problems with it. I used to use this as my primary rig, and still do sometimes, but now mostly only use it for mobile recording. It works great, and I have recorded up to 14 tracks live at once. I have no worries that it could do more, as it easily handled those. I have even done live shows with this rig that are about 60 minutes long, without any hickups. I did a test run with it before I did the live show to make sure it would run OK, and both the test, and the live show worked great.

I would do it personally, I think it is a great way to go. The only thing to look out for, is that if you are going to mix at all, some of the plugs are becoming unavailable for g4, and soon enough some stuff will not be supported on this platform, but for now, I am still using tiger anyway, not leopard, so I don't really worry about it.

We use an HD24 for live recording - direct outs from the mixer. We have recorded hundreds of hours of audio and the HD24 has never let us down. Buy a cheap USB interface kit (just power and USB to EIDE adaptor) and use HD24Tools (free app) to get the audio files off the HD24 drive, Import into PT and start mixing....
