Default is an avid 888 the same as digidesign 888?

avid has a silver/grey/beige color 888 interface. it looks exactly like the digidesign 'black' 888 except two thing...

1: the color is different.
2: at the back of the avid model it has two computer ports and has a switch for 8 ch. mode and 2x4 ch. mode.

anyone knows that the avid model will work w/ protools 5.1 w/ mix core card? what exactly do that 2x4 ch. mode do?

thx
