Graphic freeze on playback

New macbook pro 16 inch 32G ram / I9 / 2.3
OS 10.15.4 (what it came with)


PT 2020.3.0


No apparent problem with audio playback, but graphics appears to freeze every 5 seconds or so on playback. When this happens the counter freezes and and also the cursor in the edit window freezes.


I'm also getting beach balls when doing anything in PT like looking at preferences



2 audio files no plug ins.



Changing the buffer doesn't seem to have any effect on this.

Same here, 2020.5, Mac OS, I had thought it might be the ProTools update, so I reinstalled 2020.3, but same issue.
However, there was also a recent Mac OS security update, though I did the security update two days ago and didn't notice this behavior until today:

I'm on 10.13.6 so that might narrow it down to some of these fixes listed in there?

trashing preferences so far seems to clear it up so far. I'll let you know if it changes

sounds a lot like another thread that recommends turning network off(to the outside) due to some odd iLok issue).

I have the same issue. Done all the usual like trash prefs, reinstalled, removed 3rdparty plugs... but it's still there. Turning off the network doesn't seem to make any difference. It gets better for 20sec and then the problem is back. Unusable, currently PT is a virtual door stop......

Presumably Ilok is the problem as I updated to 5.2.1 yesterday. Did remove and reinstall but....

Yes, this is exactly what I'm experiencing johan2006 - thanks for posting the video!

It's the first time I've used ProTools in several weeks since I've been giving Reaper a true trial run. This certainly put a crack in my rose-colored lenses! Glad I have a perpetual license because at this rate I may stop renewing my support plan.

I'm having the same problem. It's been driving me crazy all morning. I thought it was only on my system.

It's a bit worse than the graphics freezing. If you're recording MIDI, it freezes at the time when the GUI stutters.

Turning off the network does make it much better.

FWIW (and AFAIK), the 2020.5 update seemed to squelch it for me. Will report back here if I run into it again, although like I said I'm spending my time mostly in Reaper lately.

I'm having the same problem. It just suddenly started today. I've tried everything I can think of, but the problem still persists. I'm running Mojave.

Makes PT almost unusable at the moment, which is just awesome since I have critical projects to complete this weekend.
