Steven,

While the samsung is a great drive you are paying for a sata3 drive to put in a sata1 computer. Just to make it clear, installing a SSD in a mc pro doesn't make it boot much faster. But the soft keys react a bit more quickly (no sleep mode). What made the difference for me was the combo of the mc pro SSD and the 6GB/s data pcie card and sata3 SSD I installed in my 2012 mac computer. What I mean is 90% of my speed gain come from my computer SSD upgrade the other 10% from the MC Pro SSD upgrade.

I installed a sata2 drive in the MC Pro because the Mc Pro only runs at sata1 speed. Here is the link to the drive and cable. the drive and cable cost arount $70.00 + shipping.

If you have a spare PCIe slot in your main computer, this is what I bought
to put My system on:

Actually the old Mac Pro tower computers are all SATA II (3 Gbps) on the motherboard not SATA I (1.5 Gbps) but yes still a slow down for modern SATA III (6Gbps) SSDs that can max out the SATA III connection. So yes anybody considering SATA III SSDs should think about adding PCIe SATA III controller cards.

Even SATA III is a bottleneck, which is why so much SSD today is moving over to PCIe, and especially NVMe (a particular interface controller implementation that talks over PCIe).

You a right, but we were talking about replacing a PATA hard drive by a SSD in a MC Pro controller(not a Mac Pro), which is a 10 year old PC platform.

how do you get the image to write to an ssd so it will boot? It needs to be "blessed" somehow

Don't forget to backup your user sets before removing the old drive.

+1 for replacing the MC Pro's HD with an SSD.

My drive started making the "click of death" this morning, so there was no doubt I was going to be replacing the drive one way or the other. Replaced it with a Samsung 850 Evo 250 GB drive (about $95) and got it back up and running in under an hour. Reaction time is MUCH snappier now, since the drive never spins down or goes to sleep like the old HD did. When you hit a "setup" button, navigate the menus on the touchscreen, etc., the reaction is nearly instantaneous. System actually shuts down a lot quicker too, which is nice at the end of the day!
