Default Laptop for friend.

Ok heres the situation. A friend of mine, will be joining me at the la recording school in october/november... but none the less, he's impatient and would like to start working on music now. instead of waiting for his mac book pro from school.

So heres my question. what certified laptops are out there for under 1000-800 that he can use for pro tools mixing. and beat production. he wont be using the laptop for recording vocals, much if at any.

So tell me, all you hobos and DUC-ers. what is his smartest decision to make, financially, economically, and intelligently.

Also what kind of speakers should he get. i recommended the mackie mr 5's seeing as how they went from 350 a piece when i got them down to about 150 a piece now.

The most favored of the Windows laptops seems to be Lenovo.
