Re: Peter & Roy\'s PTLe Shootout 1: ~FINAL RESULTS~
Surfr,
I have a feeling Digi's gonna get inspired and do something like this in a future "PTLE Bootcamp" for DIGIZINE. It's right down their alley. I'm all for you contacting publications on this, but I would love to have my link published (if it ever happened) to get some hits on my site... Like I said before, though, I'm sure the participation would be overwhelming if we did another one of these, and if that's the case, I think it would be far more appealing to any outside publications if there was a higher count of entries. All of this flaming at Roy by Mark is wasted energy, if you ask me. I think it would be far more beneficial to those of us who participated if the criticism was directed at us instead of Roy and Peter. At least we could get some useful input out of it. But criticizing Roy's judging techniques?? What's the point? We're all looking to grow as producers here. Is Roy looking to grow as a "Remix Contest Judge"? I think not. He and Peter worked very hard on this and all you're doing is taking away from that. I don't really care what score I got...if there were ten other sets of judges, we'd all have ten distinctly different sets of "scores". Roy, Peter and Jackson deserve nothing but thanks from all of us. They all made this possible and we are all grateful. Mark should put all of that energy into slamming US instead of them. Murph PS...maybe we got such high scores because the judges are partial to user names that rhyme with "Nerf"?? (ha ha) Yours was great, too. Everybody did a great job. I'm mostly happy about how this is bringing all of us together as a community of engineers and musicians. |

Re: Peter & Roy\'s PTLe Shootout 1: ~FINAL RESULTS~
Hi guys,
I am having a great Sunday while listening to all the tracks and reading the comments of this respectable jury. Congratulations to Murph and Soundsurf, it's no shame to finish behind you both. To Greg, keep your head up, you had the guts to compete here in public. Feel proud and prepair for the big revenge in the next round. To Roy and Peter. Thanks for stepping on my toes sir. I agree that the sugar levels are much to high in my arrangement and about the guitar solo you nailed my right there. To all the competitors, you are all very creative individuals. It is so much fun to listen to what you had done with the great vocal track of Jackson Jackson, thanks Jackson(2x).Your orginal was a big suprise to me. To Roy and Peter, I can't believe how much time you both put in this shootout. I take a deep bow for you. This section of the DUC is a great hangout place for me. Time for a group hug and the DUC yell. Pieter PS Soundsurf, I have no reservation about your idea. |

I thought most of the entrants would shoot for a ballady style song, which is why I did the versions I did, upped the tempo, and put some electronic elements to it. Thanks again! =-Ben<hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Actualy, I did like Torment the best out of everything I listend to. But I did enjoy your versions of Burn as well. |

Re: Peter & Roy\'s PTLe Shootout 1: ~FINAL RESULTS~
Hello all, sorry I'm late, but my employer has me working 12 hour shifts at the state fair of Texas.
First let me say thanks to Bastiaan for hosting my mp3. Peter & Roy, You guys are awesome! I certainly appreciate the sacrifice of your own personal time in order to help the rest of us. I've learned so much from reading your reviews. Being relatively new to recording, I know I have a lot to learn. That's exactly why I entered this contest. I've spent most of my time on this forum as a sponge, just soaking in the enormous wealth of tips and information available here on the DUC. That's why I decided to stick my foot out and see where I stood in the group. Now that I know where I stand, I can see more clearly the directions I must go to improve myself. Roy, You gave me a 1 in Producing. Okay, now the question. In your opinion, what should I do to make the production better? Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Peter, I certainly appreciate your in depth and informative review of my version of the song. Your honesty and criticism of my mix very motivating to me. Everyone, Thanks so much for letting me play on your playground. I've been listening to the different mixes and they are all so good. I guess what amazes me is how they are all so different. It's strange, after hearing the vocals for the first time, I knew exactly where I wanted to take the song. Then, after working with it for a short while, I couldn't imagine hearing it any other way. That's why this contest is so great. After hearing all the other mixes, I realize there are many more directions I could have taken this song. I guess you could say it's broadened my musical creativity. Capt Pants, Thanks so much for the kind words. What you hear in the background are some classical strings chugging along. Since I don't actually own a synth or drum machine, I had to borrow a keyboard from my store one evening. I used it to sequence the drums and add the strings. Thanks again to all who made this contest work. Especially BRB who gave us such a great starting point. I would love to hear from anyone else who would like to critique or offer any tips for my mix. Thanks guys, this has been a blast. I can't wait for the next shootout. Brad

Re: Peter & Roy\'s PTLe Shootout 1: ~FINAL RESULTS~
I have to say this was the most incredible tournament I've ever watched, and nearly participated in. Sorry, I started working a very early shift and had no energy left for music the past two weeks, sigh.
But the darn thing worked perfectly! Jackson provided what I think is the perfect vocal spine to craft a song around. I don't think he could have given us a better one. It could be anything, as evidenced by the diversity of songs created around it. Good grief, talk about diversity! I'm listening to them even as I type, and they're all really awesome. I was particularly curious of Jackson's own song, and it was a real pleasant surprise. I'm gonna have to go to your site and ransack the thing, wring out all the mp3s I can find. All the other tracks were amazing interpretations of Mr Jackson's intent, but a couple do stick out just a scouche. Captain, I'm not a huge techno fan, but those are some mighty big pants. Amazing stuff. I think if I was going to pick a fave, it would be Stuart Tichenor's, it was really smooth and sweet, very Mike Rutherford. I loved it. I think of those doing the minor songs, Ted Metzger's and top1percent's worked pretty darn well! I really liked those tracks a LOT. I would say that if an engineer started to edit out those leads, I would edit his caboose right out the door. I'd like to finish what I started someday soon and get an appraisal after the fact, I suppose in the "Show us your best" thread. I do think if I was going to invite an engineer to work with me on an album that Peter would be the wrong choice, since he seems to come from a contemporary pop perspective, tho his input would certainly be constructive. Everyone should keep in mind that some mighty big classic hits would go down in flames under such stern rulings, so everyone should be proud of what they did. Great job. Now do it again! Re: Peter & Roy\'s PTLe Shootout 1: ~FINAL RESULTS~
Roy,
I am completely comfortable accepting your suggestions here on the DUC. I appreciate your consideration of my feelings by giving me a choice of platform to discuss these suggestions. However, I greatly respect your opinion and accept any suggestions you make as an attempt on your part to improve my abilites. For that I am grateful. Now, for fun, I would like to see if some of your suggestions match some of my own personal critiques. 1) Too much reverb on the vocals. Especially noticable in the first verse. I was trying to create a more spacious, dreamy kind of sound, but didn't quite pull it off. I probably should have tried a slight delay or maybe even a flanger.(Silly me, I didn't realize you could automate effects. Bastiaan pointed this out after he posted the song. Like I said, I'm new to this.) 2) Vocals too loud in mix on the first verse and possibly the first chorus. After that I felt it blended in okay, but I could be wrong. 3) I should have re-recorded the acoustic guitar intro to get rid of the fret buzz. Due to time constraints I let this one slide. Shame on me! 4) I also missed a few things on the lead guitar that I let slide because of time. I'm looking forward to hearing your suggestions. And I appreciate you taking your time to help me get better. I believe that's the reason we're all here on the DUC, to become more proficient at what we love. And some of us, especially me, need a little kick to get us going in the right direction.

For the record:
Credits to Michiel, my music friend who gave me a boost on this production with his arrival at my PTle set up. He plays the electr.guitar that starts with the first verse and the rhythm guitar in the chorus. He also did the solo but only 'cause I asked for it. Pieter |
