Peter&Roy\'s PTLe Shootout starts here
Hi everybody!
Welcome to the start of the first PTLe shootout. The object of this exercise is to provide every participant with a dry vocal track of the same new song, and for them to give it their own treatments, bactracks, and mixes. There are no prizes yet,but the judges will be myself and Roy Howell. We will judge mixes on structure, radiofriendlyness, originality ect (more about that later.Anyone who is a member of the DUC and who works on PTLe (Mac or PC)can participate. The end goal is to have fun and get feedback as well as an insight into each other's approaches and techniques. For each competition we will first select a song for the competition.Anyone with PTle can submit a dry vocal track of any original self written song that has not been published yet.The submission must contain one verse and one chorus and may not be bigger than 1.5 megs.It must be posted as a link in this thread,in MP3 format. The deadline for submissions is Sunday 15 sept,12am Eastern Standard Time. The track that has the most potential for different interpretations (musically) will be selected, and the writer of the selected track will be asked to submit a full, high resolution MP3 track of the whole vocal,as well as the tempo of his LE session within 2 days. The link to this will be posted on the DUC and anyone wanting to download it,convert it to wav and do something with it,will be welcome to do so.A deadline for submissions of the mixes will then be set and that will be it! If you would like to submit a track for mixing, please do so here.It would be interesting to hear what other people hear in your song, wouldnt it? You just need to record it with a clicktrack, with no backing music. It must be in-tempo and in-tune to be considered. Your song submission must be less than 1.5 megs, contain only one verce and one chorus, and have a clicktrack on it.The vocals must be dry, with no effects,no doubles and no harmonies. The vocals must be panned hard one way with the click panned hard to the other. And of course you must be willing to let anyone on the DUC grab it and work with it,although the copyright of the song will always remain yours. This is not a commercial competition and there are no prizes. You can also only enter stuff done on PTLE.If you are a proffesional, this competition isnt for you. This for the rest of us,and first and foremost, for fun. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Alright, this should be fun, I can't wait. Now I will be forced to learn how to do this midi stuff as I can't record any drums yet, but I look forward to it.

Peter,
Sounds complicated. Are you sure these PCs can handle it or will we need a Mac? Allen |

Re: Peter&Roy\'s PTLe Shootout starts here
Great idea!!!!!
I would love to do some mixing of the songs, since i am only an engineer, and not playing an instrument or singing......(Peter knows how my vocals are like..... )

I don't quite get it ... so you have a click track and a vocal ? How do you mix that ? Where are the instruments coming from ?

Re: Peter&Roy\'s PTLe Shootout starts here
This is more a production thing than purely a mix thing.Later on we might figure out a way to run mix shootouts sensibly.
For this you only get the lead vocal,a click and a tempo. The rest you have to suck out of your thumb. This competition (if one wants to call it that)might only be for the home-studio guys out there, but its definitely not for sissys.

Re: Peter&Roy\'s PTLe Shootout starts here
Right I still don't get it. Is the competitiion to just process the raw vocal ?
I don't understand how you can "produce" a vocal without a backing ? Do you just want us to go on a plugin fest ? Compression and EQ for instance are pretty irrelevant without a context. I'm not having a go here, I kinda really like the idea of giving a bunch of people a bunch of raw tracks to mix. Could sort the men from the boys out nicely Cheers, Marcus |

Re: Peter&Roy\'s PTLe Shootout starts here
it sounds interesting. if i understand correctly, somone will provide a vocal part and the rest of us will try to create a song around it. if thats the case, where do we get the vocal part? and why limit it to one verse and one chorus? why not let the vocalist make any number of verses?
i'm down with it, though
