Default need adat help please!

i have a project mix running m-powered 8. i want to hook up my firestudio via adat to the project mix. i have 2 optical cables connecting both. i went into my project mix firewire window under "digital hardware" and selected adat in and adat out. under "sync" i chose internal unmuted. i went into setup>IO>setup the optical 1-8 ins and outs. still the sync light is still blinking. here is my question

does the firestudio need to be connected firewire so i can mess with settings as well as my project mix using another firewire same time?

if anyone can also add anything else i might be missed it would be greatly apreciated. i have spent many hours and no luck!
