For your case, I would suggest you upgrade to pro tools 11 or find a daw that better suit your workflow.
PT 11 as I said enables you to bypass plugins by types no matter where they are in a tracks, or if they are part of an other plugins (provided that the third party plugin maker coded that plugin with that capability). And with the work around you said you know, then it alleviates your problem, that upgrade in your case is justified and so would the cost, as the new options fits your workflow.
