Default Re: 2020.3 using much more CPU - results in video dropped frames

Hey all,

I've done a bit more testing (plenty of time for that at the moment!). I took a screen shot of CPU usage stats with the same session in every test, at the same point on the timeline, starting playback at the same point each time. For every test case, I ran the test 3 times and then averaged the results - which should help balance the slight difference in points at which I took the screen shot, as well as any other tasks the machine was running.

I tested the following OS/PT installation combinations:

10.13.6 with PT 2019.12
10.13.6 with PT 2020.3
10.14.6 with PT 2020.3
10.15.4 with PT 2020.3

Overall, 10.13.6/2019.12 is the most CPU efficient installation, and the worst (by a considerable amount) is 10.15.4/2020.3

Results below - percentage changes from the 10.13.6/2019.12 setup marked in color
(note that the numbers for PT System Usage are taken from the system usage gas gauge within Pro Tools, all other numbers are from iStat Menus. DAPS is for Dolby Atmos Prodution Suite).

10.13.6 – PT 2019.12
PT System Usage 42.67%
iStat Menus: Pro Tools 338.87%
iStat Menus: DAPS 36.67%
iStat Menus: Overall CPU Idle 46.00%

10.13.6 – PT 2020.3
PT System Usage 49.33% -15.63%
iStat Menus: Pro Tools 391.03% -15.39%
iStat Menus: DAPS 37.17% -1.36%
iStat Menus: Overall CPU Idle 36.33% -26.61%

10.14.6 – PT 2020.3
PT System Usage 53.67% -25.78%
iStat Menus: Pro Tools 391.37% -15.49%
iStat Menus: DAPS 34.07% +7.09%
iStat Menus: Overall CPU Idle 38.00% -21.05%

10.15.4 – PT 2020.3
PT System Usage 54.00% -26.56%
iStat Menus: Pro Tools 429.20% -26.66%
iStat Menus: DAPS 45.23% -23.36%
iStat Menus: Overall CPU Idle 32.67% -40.82%

The computer in question is an iMac17,1 with a quad-core 4GHz i7 processor; obviously all the numbers are relevant only for this CPU - presumably a more powerful CPU would yield less difference between results. But it does make for an interesting "apples to apples" comparison. I'm no computer rocket scientist, but what it does tell me is that my machine is starting to get long in the tooth
