PTLE System Digi002 Receiving ADAT
I'm trying to understand how PTLE handles ADAT light-pipe protocol. In theory light pipe is supposed to allow a digi002 to handle 8 separate tracks from another source, ie: ADAT machine, 8ch dig preamp, etc. Can that "other source" be from another [non-synced] digi002 running on a totally separate DAW?
We have two DAWs both running PTLE. But again, they're not synced at all. * Should PTLE on DAW no.1 be able to bus the 8 out as ADAT [via digi002 light pipe] and PTLE on DAW no.2 [receive] the new 8 ADAT channels as separate channels [via its own digi002 light pipe]? I've been troubleshooting another problem involving the attempt to [sync] two PT systems and slave one digi 002 to another just for controlling transport function and for syncing clocks. But this is not what we're trying to do here... Thx, |

Re: PTLE System Digi002 Receiving ADAT
So using [2] Digi002's, we successfully did what I described above:
1 Digi002 sending 8 ADAT channels thru lightpipe to a second Digi002. We successfully tracked 16 channels with this setup, but WOW the cracks and pops!!! My gosh, they were louder than the drums we were recording at times... To try to narrow in on the noise source, we reversed the ADAT flow from one 002 to the other, tried switching cables, etc. But no difference. So, we're not sure if they're originating in the Digi's optical OUTs, or the INs, or the cables. Question: does anyone know where the noise originates? And if there's a way to eliminate it? I'm wondering if using an 8-channel digital I/O, like a Presonus D8 [instead of other Digi] to send into Digi002 will eliminate the noise? Or, are the 002's just noisy IN and OUT?? : ] |

Re: PTLE System Digi002 Receiving ADAT
When using ADAT optical, the two units need to be clock synced. The receiving 002 needs to have its clock source set to optical.

Thx Jimmy- are you saying that is supposed to fix the noise problem?

Re: PTLE System Digi002 Receiving ADAT
Ok awesome! ... thanks for letting me know!
Oh, and would you have any advice on syncing transport function from one 002 to the other? We've tried using midi cables and mtc/mcc but haven't had any success though they do seem to be trying to communicate. (master can stop slave but not play/record, etc. And when slave is "online" it doesn't record at all). : ] Last edited by Julian Fletcher; 04-04-2014 at 12:39 AM. Reason: clarification |

Pro Tools works a little differently than others when it comes to syncing transports via MTC. On the primary computer where you intend to sit, set Pro Tools to transmit MMC and receive MTC. On the secondary setup, set Pro Tools to receive MMC and transmit MTC. Also be sure to sync the two 002s together with one being clock master and the other slaved to it. On the primary computer, place the transport online and almost every transport function will work between the two. The one thing that won't work together is record. You'll still need to enable it independently on each.

Thx Jimmy!! I'll give it another try. I though we had done all that but maybe something wasn't quite right...
