Default Re: Maxim or Smack! ?

Maxim has that classic Digidesign sound - squared off. Waves L3 (not the L1 or 2) are silkily transparent in comparison. Worth running native for the sound alone.

I'm looking for compression on a mix bus containing 9 vocal tracks, 3 tracks each of the same female vocalist singing 3-part harmony. This is nothing fancy, just a pop song.

I applied Maxim to the bus but wasn't especially impressed with the results. Then I applied Smack! and was amazed at how it improved the cohesiveness of the 9 vocal tracks in the mix. As of now I'm a Smack! fan.

Thanks to everyone for their insights.

I would definitely agree that smack is the better tool for this application. You might however find even better results with some of tools mentioned by others. Given that music isn't my primary area (TV & Film post) then I can't add to their suggestions, but would love to hear your experiences. Music production is my hobby whereas post is my job.

Thanks, 8dB. I am just a neophyte in home recording, and am in it for fun only. I've taken Pro Tools 101 at a local community college. I'm mainly a guitarist and keyboard player who wants to record his own work and that of a few like-minded musician friends. I'm retired from my real job (ear, nose, and throat surgeon).

It's worth noting that Maxim seems to have been improved in AAX.

All the stock plugs seem to have benefited, except channel strip.

I'm digging Pro Compressor. I like smack but I feel like it adds back low end I've tried to cut out, I could be tripping.

Emcha - I'm well aware of that. The move to 64bit / PT11 hasn't helped CS - it's still utter pants. Why do you think they developed the lovely ProCompressor and ProLimiter. Bring on a ProEQ - a 7 band fully parametric switchable function EQ to rival the Sonnox or the Neve DFC EQ. The sooner they ditch or fix CS the better.
