Default Drummer can't keep time

I've had a couple of good sessions lately . . .

I recorded base tracks (drums / bass / rhythm) & try after try, the drummer could not keep time throughout. The tracks are OK as far as playing goes, but, he goes in & out of time (faster / slower / etc.).

Is there a way to bring this session in to a steady time? Would elastic audio do the trick? If not, any suggestions?

Lucky - I was only doing one song with this band . . .

Maybe Beat detective? I just had a similar(and equally painful) session. The only thing that worked in my favor is I was using a Roland kit with real cymbals and hat so only 3 audio tracks with no drum bleed. I used the midi to drive ezdrummer and this has turned out to be a blessing for so many reasons(including being able to manually move the drum hits without regard to leakage). Not only was this drummer out of time, and out of feel(shuffle on the hat with straight time(almost) on the foot, but he had tons of ghost hits from laying the stick down on the snare between hits, and laying the beater on the kick pad(I call it "lazy" technique as none of these ghost hits were in time with the songs). If you have Drumagog, you may be able to move the audio around and then use Drumagog to replace the sounds because, Drumagog also acts as a better noise gate than any I have used( so gaps in the regions from editing will not be as bad an issue). None of this may help your situation but I wanted to toss the idea up for consideration.

I'm going to try elastic audio - - I've been looking around on the site - - I see where I can add it to a track - - elicious, how can I use it on the whole song - as you mention in your reply?

Are there any tutorials on the digidesign site?

I'm still looking myself . . .

first, make a tempo map- you could use b.d.; i do it with identify beat...
zoom in on your kik,
show tempo in your ruler and clic on the triangle to see the tempo events.
make sure conductor is on.
find your downbeat; command I, enter bar 1, count four to your next measure, tab to nearest kik, command I, enter bar 2, and so forth,
get into a rhythm it'll go fast.
meanwhile look at your tempo events you'll see the real time tempo being calculated, always good to embarrass the drummer later.

next, enable all group, activate elastic (polyphonic is fine)
now select all trax to be tick based.
turn all grp off

then, turn conductor off
enter a tempo manually or move the tempo slider back and forth and watch the magic.
make friends and influence people

The way elicious has it is just the way I did a session earlier this year. The drummer would slower for about one bar after each change. Charted out a tempo map and used EA on the bars that offended. When the band came in to do overdubs they didn't even notice the fix.

Just getting back to this session . . .

I don't have beat detective. Is there a way to do this without bd? Also - the tracks were not recorded to the click . . . so, it makes sense that I need to set a base tempo / map - - but, can I do that without bd?

After re-reading several times . . . questions . . .

I'm guessing that your description is how to do it without beat detective - right? If yes - - I'm missing some things - can you expand on the following . . . (sorry for the detail - I just haven't done this before)

show tempo in your ruler and clic on the triangle to see the tempo events.
make sure conductor is on.
-tried several versions of what I think this is - - the ruler on top? the triangle shows what the options are but doesn't do much else - i'm missing something

find your downbeat; command I, enter bar 1, count four to your next measure, tab to nearest kik
-what does command I convert to for a PC?

Thanks -

OK - show's how much I haven't dug deep into PT . . .

beat detective and identify beat are both options under the Event menu. The other thing was - i didn't have tab to transients turned on - - you need it on for identify beat.

I followed the instructions & it worked. I did notice that the drummer was so far off - that within one measure, there were time differences. They were small, so I just adjusted those manually.

Thanks e.

Go watch the DIGI videos on Elastic Audio as it would be perfect. I just did 2 days ago and reworked drum tracks with amazing results. Make a group of all the drum audio tracks and go to town.
