S3 mystery switch malfunction?

The User button on the left control group which is supposed to default to the Save function does not work. I have had the unit for over a year and it has never worked. I made the mistake of ignoring it as I could use the Save button on the Dock and thought it was a simple software glitch or needed a firmware update. I recently spoke to tech support and they suggested reinstalling Eucontrol and the firmware. No luck. It's a programmable switch but programming it for any function is not possible. It reads as programmed but nada. No LED, no switch function. Tech support suggested I return the unit for repair, cost in excess of $1500. Tech support did not suggest testing the switch in utility mode. This thought did not occur to me till later.

To enter this mode you have to use the user switch in conjunction with 3 others. It seemed clear that the switch must work otherwise I would not be able to enter the test mode. Once in the test mode the switch, when tested, reads as #119 and the LED tests positive, showing red, green or yellow on demand. I don't think I need a $1500 switch replaced. Any ideas out there?

I have noticed this too.. I generally haven't bothered to investigate. I thought it might just be mine.t

Thanks for the note. That's reassuring. At least I'm not alone and this tends to support the notion that it's a software issue.

Well, I now have a use for the damn button and I'd like it to work.

Assuming you're running Mac OS, have you tried using it say for example, to open a new wind in Safari? ie Command + N ... this seems to work for me, but the save function it is set for in Pro Tools does not.
