Default New System Configuration

Hi,
I am looking to buy a new system and was hoping to gather some thoughts on the following system and if it should be adequate. In addition to PTLE I will be using BFD2 and a few other plug-ins.

Dell Precision T7400
Windows XP sp2
Intel Xeon E5460 (3.16GHz, 1.333FSB, 2 x 6MB, Quad Core,
8GB 667 MHz, ECC (8 x 1GB)
512 MB PCIe x16 nVidia Quadro FX 1700 Grafic Card
750GB SATA2 hard drive (7.200U/min)

Thanks
Robert

I have no idea if the motherboard has an approved chipset. You need 2 hard drives and the system drive can be a small (40-80 gig) as all your sessions would go on a separate drive. 8 gig of RAM is a waste of money right now as XP will only recognize 3.2 to 3.5 gig so I would go with 2x2gig in dual channel mode. Your money might be better spent building a Quad or a Core2 system described on the first page of each of those threads.

Does matter how big the external hard drive is? I was thinking of getting a 80 gig hard drive?

Don't take this the wrong way but you could find much better ways to spend your money.

Like Allbee says without knowing what the chipset is no one can say whether it will work or not. If its a Intel chipset than the answer is "Probably" but I would check with Digi for the latest Chipset info.

A regular desktop based Quad will be about 30% faster and a thousand dollars cheaper.

Thanks for the replies. I now remember reading about the memory configuration for XP, so thanks for the reminder, 4GB should be enough. The chipset is the Intel 5400 chipset.
