Default Zero Latency Monitoring for 002/003

Cross posting this from the Mac board as its a cross platform thing that I hope people will find useful! ...

I know the whole zero latency monitoring thing continues be be hot topic of conversation, so I wanted to share this particular solution that I came up with for a client - using an RME audio interface! Fireface audio interfaces lend themselves to this pretty well because they can be set to standalone AD-DA mode and also provide custom input monitoring. Came up with it for a customer and now use it myself! If you want all the details on how to make it work, its posted here: http://www.jigsawbroadcast.com/conte...2-and-003.aspx

Well yes - but if you already have a console you don't have the problem in the first place

Precisely! You'd be AMAZED by the number of people that don't see the necessity...

Sure....you want ideally to hear the signal as it's going IN. If you "wait" til it's coming OUT there's at least a LITTLE latency and for the talent it's a little disorienting.

I think a better option would be to get Mackie Onyx 1640i and use PT M-powered. This gives you 16 tracks of zero latancy I/O.

Or like SWrec said, just use any other decent console.

So what would be the best / cheapest/easiest ways to do this?

I have a Digi 002 - Eleven Rack - Presonus Digimax D8

I have a set of powered monitors hooked to the 11R and a pwr amp and monitors hooked to the 002.

The best thing to do here is just buy a cheap analog console. You can even buy one with on board effects. Now you can monitor with no latency and effects and still record dry into pro tools. Later on you can even do some analog summing. Less headache for roughly the same cost of buying other audio interfaces. Infact i would say it is a necessity. Even the pros with an expensive HD rig are mixing on their Neve and SSL large format analog consoles. Pro tools to them is just an editor.

I do both depending on mood, but at a 64 buffer no one ever says they hear the difference.
