002 96k recording issue..static
Hey all,
I've been getting this nasty static while trying to record with an earthworks QTC40 mic at 24bit/96k using the 002 pre's. I've tried everything I can think of..I've tried different cables, I've tested all four pre's, I tried an Mbox pro on a completely different rig.. Each instance had the static... There is one rig with pretty much the exact same set up as i have (mac pro power pc, 002..etc.) and the earthworks, works fine. No static! I've also tried a mic of lesser quality( by a ways) and it works, no static! It's very odd and very frustrating. Any thoughts, ideas or solutions to why I can't use the earthworks with 002 at 96k? p.s other pre amps are being considered.. Just want to solve the digi problem. Thanks CKS--Sound Slayer |

Re: 002 96k recording issue..static
So, the static always appears when using that particular mic (but not another of the same brand) with any Pro Tools rig? Then it's the mic. Unless you mean you used the very mic in question on another rig and it worked fine. Not sure which you're saying. If the mic works fine on one system but not on two other different ones, that's a bit of a mystery. Easiest explanation would be, the mic is defective but temperamental.

I did use the very mic in question on another rig and it worked. It could very well be the mic. We may just need to send it in for tests but for now it remains a mystery.

Re: 002 96k recording issue..static
You didn't say anything about using the same mic on the same rig(s) at a sample rate other than 96 kHz. What happens then?
See, as far as analog mics and pres go, a signal is a signal. A mic has no way of knowing what sample rate it's being converted at, and a converter has no way of knowing the source of the signal it's sampling. The most bizarre scenario imaginable would be, it consistently works fine with mic A at all sample rates except 96, and mic B works fine at all sample rates including 96. I can't think of any possible explanation for that other than bad luck.

Re: 002 96k recording issue..static
I'm pretty sure the issue is the microphone being temperamental.
