Default 23.98 Video Sync Issue

Hi All.

I've just been given a new movie to mix which was shot at 23.98 on the Red Epic camera.
Apparently there was some issue with 24fps and so they decided to go with 23.98!??
Don't ask.

Anyway, I've just done a test in Pro Tools and when I import the 23.98 pro res file with pro tools set to 23.976, which is the closest rate it offers, the frame rate on the video track is red, as it would be if the frame rate was wrong.
Which I guess it is.

Also the head of the video clip, refuses to snap to an exact second.
When I zoom in it seems to be about a quarter frame out.

Is this going to cause me any issues later on down the line?
I intend to re-conform with conformaliser, which has worked brilliantly for me in 24fps.

Should I be worried about a quarter frame mismatch, or is there a clever way around this?

If anyone else has been down this same road I'd be very grateful for any advice.

Many Thanks,

Martin

I'm working with 23.98fps footage all the time, and don't experience any of your issues. Have a look
There's gotta be something wrong.

Obvious questions first. Is your QuickTime movie actually created as 23.98 (as reported by Quicktime)? Is your session actually set for 23.98? Either of those being different would explain why the frame edges of the movie and your timeline don't line up right.

Thanks for the really quick replies guys!

Thanks too Meads for the picture, I can see it should work!

I have my session set exactly like yours 23.976 in session setup, but 23.98 in the video track is red.

Quicktime reports the video is 23.98, but when playing is 24.

Is it a video file issue maybe? What codec are you using?

If during playback it shows another framerate, something's definitely fishy.
I've seen that before, but I have no idea, what exactly this means. Tell your video guys. They should know, and they should send you another file.

I thought it might be fishy too.

But I've never had a 23.98 file before and thought maybe quicktime has to speed it up for display purposes?

I'll contact them tomorrow and get them to check it out.

Cheers

M

I got it to work!

Here's what I did in case anyone else comes across this:

I always convert the files the video guys send me to Pro Res Proxy with MPEG Streamclip.
When I originally converted the file I put 23.98 in the frame rate box in MPEG Streamclip and that file caused problems.

I just went back and re-converted the original and put 23.976 in the frame rate and now Pro Tools is happy. The Video track TC is grey and it allows me to spot to whole seconds. Weird.

Anyway it works and I can go to bed a happy man.

Many thanks for the help guys.

Yes of course I meant 23.976. I just said 23.98 because that's the way QT displays it and that's the way you wrote it. Glad you found the trouble.

BTW, QT also tends to show actual playback frame rate as whole numbers, like 24 or 30 when it is really 23.976 or 29.97. It seems to be a realtime measurement that is not taken with a high degree of resolution.

Dear All
This is a stupid answer did you already change the timecode rate to 23,98 on your session set up?
Then
as far as I know Red Epic can not go at 23.98 they only shoot at 24.
This is perhaps the reason why the speed tag on the video track is red.
they suppose to shoot at 23.98 but for real the camera generate a 24 fps file.
Hope this helps
thank you
maurizio
