The "Cocktail' script running application has cured Mac behaviors for me.
The OSX system uses virtual ram scratch disk. i.e. hard drive for ram cache.
Ideally your boot drive should have 20 Gb or better of space. if my Mac got too much below this I noticed a operational speed slow down.
In Cocktail I use the clean virtual swap file and occasionally the clean system cache. The cron script if you do not leave your Mac on 24-7. This is a Mac maintenance script that runs automatically in the middle of the night.
The repair permissions I do from the Mac’s Disk utility. I am not sure of the difference but the Mac repair if ran after cocktails seems to repair additional items.
I figure this is due to the OS updating being more current than cocktail.
I am using Cocktail 3.4.9 Mac OS 10.3.6
Pro Tools 6.7 cs5, Mac Quicksilver 2002 Dual G4.
I also use Disk Warrior as part of my Mac maintenance routine.

Since OS X does a lot of the cleanup for you, I just use ONYX to repair permissions, clean your cache, etc. Very nice. Much easier than entering the commands via terminal. As long as you remember to reboot twice after running it, you're golden. I've been using it weekly (and after installing apps, as sometimes the installers don't clean up or optimize as well as they should) and running PT with no issues.

Good Luck!

EDIT: If you are interested, I can post the UNIX commands

I like Applejack because it runs from the command line before launching the UI.

Then if your computer is not on 24/7 I use MacJanitor to manually run the cron scripts. You can also run them from the command line with sudo periodic daily, sudo periodic weekly, and sudo periodic monthly.

Jim, yes Mac Janitor is great!

ONYX incorporates all that mac janitor does and more.

(essentially, mac janitor just does what your mac is supposed to do every morning at 2 am, but since I don't leave my mac on, I lose out!)
