Question Max audio track count with CPTK, does anyone know?

Hello All!

I'm a little confused on this matter and I keep finding different information/answers about it.

Does anyone know what's the max audio track count I can have on Pro Tools 10 (native), with and without Complete Production Toolkit?

Right know, with CPTK, I'm getting a max of 128 stereo tracks on 44.1 and 48 Khz sessions and a max of 64 stereo tracks at 96 Khz. I haven't tested it without CPTK because my iLok is connected to a USB port inside the CPU and I'd have to open it to remove it.

This is lower than what I've read I should be getting, but then again, I've found different and probably unreliable information while looking arround.

Thanks in advance for you comments.

Francisco

What you are getting is correct. 256 mono, 128 stereo, at 44.1. And reduced as you go higher.

The specs are here:

http://www.avid.com/US/products/Comp...uction-Toolkit

It doesn't specify mono or stereo, but I guess they assume people will figure it out at this point. They don't specify mono or stereo for the HD systems either, but CPTK gives you the same track capabilities.

Keep in mind that in modern recording and mixing, there's only a small amount of situations that would require stereo tracks.

Thanks for you answer, that is better than what I found before.

It just comes to my attention the quoted comment. What do you mean by the idea of modern recording having a small amount of situations where you need stereo tracks? I'm currently using stereo tracks for the same amount of situations that I had 15 years ago. These are some examples:

- Recording anything with a stereo output, like synths and guitar/bass processors, FX processors, etc (these are a lot of situations).

- Anything with stereo positioned mics.

- Stems for mastering.

Am I ignoring something that can turn those same old situations into mono tracks?

I may have misunderstood your first post. It sounded like 128 stereo tracks would not be enough for you, and I had a hard time understanding how that might be.

Out of the things you mention, I didn't see a whole lot of things that would truly need stereo tracks.

I'm not saying this is the case with you, but a lot of people don't seem to understand that what makes up the stereo image is often a lot of things recorded in mono that are panned appropriately in the stereo field. Often these are sent to stereo effects (that can be on stereo aux tracks, which don't eat up audio tracks).

As for guitar processors, etc., that's another situation where someone is not obligated to use stereo outs, though a lot of the presets may have fancy stereo effects going on.

Also, for mixdown, some sources can be in mono, then bussed to a stereo aux track with stereo plugins inserted on that, again, not using up audio tracks.

And then with synth patches, that's another area similar to guitar processors, where the synth patches may sound better in stereo by themselves, but in the mix may be better off in mono, panned appropriately in the stereo field.

So anyway, you may have a specific way that has worked well for you, and may indeed need a lot of stereo tracks, but in some peoples' cases, lack of knowledge and/or inefficient track management may have been a factor.
