Digi002 RACKMOUNT -or- CONTROL SURFACE?

I'm desperately wanting to get my hands on an 002 but I'm a little confused as to what I need.
Will I need both the rack mount & the control surface or can I get away with just having one or the other?

Is there a huge advantage to having the control surface over the rack mount?

You can get away with just the 002R and then, should you so wish you can buy a control surface but it's not essential. Pro Tools supports the hui protocol for third party control surfaces, i actually use the behringer BCF2000 with my 002R and it's a great little device, works perfectly with Pro Tools, theres also the command 8 by Digi which will give you tighter integration but it's way more expensive. You might also wanna check pro tools m-powered with the project mix i/o for a real bargain.

I like the 002R just because I can mount it with my motu 2408 and my mic pre with spidf out. I found a great surface made by Radikal Technologies. It is the Sac 2.2. It not only controls P.T. but many other daw's as well as some midi units as well. It is not as full function as the 002 but it is almost as good. If you are lucky you can find one on ebay for $500 or so. I really like mine. Good luck.
