is RCA the same as S/PDIF? The look the same but I could never figure out if they were compatible. I thought S/PDIF was digital or something.. but are you sure that adapter would work? Cuz that'd be just awesome!

standard 2 channel rackmount effects with xlr i/o and 1/4" i/o, neither of which are supported by the M-Audio Project Mix for effects sends/returns.
You are mistaken. As I said, the Hardware I/O's, (i.e. XLR and 1/4" 1 thru 8) are to be used in that case and will be available to choose on Audio and Aux tracks in Pro Tools.

I suggest you go to the Technical Documents section and download a reference guide for M-Powered PT. Get a head start on the learning curve before you buy.

ohhhhh my bad, I didn't realize you could do that! That is awesome! Thank's, I guess I have lots of reading to do lol.

By the way, i've been using ProTools LE for about a year, I've just never used outboard effects before (all RTAS thus far). I was confused because the 002R has effects send/returns and the ProjectMix doesn't, but I understand now. So what I'm trying to say is that I'm not a complete noob, but there's definately plenty more to learn.

With Pro Tools... you bet.
I find a new nugget most everyday.
Good luck and let us know how the ProjectMix works out for you.

Oh... S/PDIF uses RCA jacks, but it is a digital format, not analog.

So if you wanted to take an outboard Sonix Maximizer (analog?) and use TS cable w/ an adapter to plug it into the S/PDIF in.. That wouldn't work?

No... S/PDIF digital only.
You'll have to use analog In's and Outs.

does anybody know if you could use the 1/4" ins for effects while using the xlr ins for mics? for example - sonic maximizer outboard in line-1 with a mic in xlr-1, then set up tracks in Pro Tools with seperate tracks for effect and mic, so (ideally) you could use the effect across any track. Is anything like this possible, or is it a one-or-the-other situation..?

No. You cannot have two inputs at the same time on the same line. You can use any of the other unused inputs for the maximizer, apply it to an Aux track, and Bus any/all tracks you wish to it.
Or, you could apply it to the Master fader to effect the entire mix.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up. The project mix has 8 mic ins which is perfect for drums, but nothing extra (effects).. (of course this isn't a problem for a few simultaneous vocal/guitar/bass tracks) so it looks like i'll be getting the M-Audio Octane for an additional (simultaneous) 8 ins through lightpipe.. Has anybody tried this yet? I found the Octane for $475 at www.floridamusicco.com ($600 everywhere else).

How to get 18 inputs with an 001/002/002r?
From spkguitar.

And yes, these options are widely used.
