What are you using to monitor temps?

Also are you sure you're not using too much AS5?

6969, just wanted to pass on this newegg link. you might have seen it already. i don't know if it applies or adds any insight to your situation but wanted to pass it along anyway. see the review from Krogoth255 on 8/6/2007

I'm using the program Core Temp.

http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/

I'm literally squirting a thin line from the tube just like the picture shows in the PDF for how to apply it to a Quad chip. I can't get the line any thinner than what it comes out of the small tube.

I don't know what else to say. Its getting to be rediculous really. Is it alot to ask for me to get mid or low 40C temps while idle? Certainly 60C temps while idle are too high.

Thanks. I hadn't seen that.

I wish some other folks would run Core Temp and let me know the readings they are getting with the B3 while Idle.

Looks as though you know what your doing. And no it isn't too much to ask even for a B3 to be idling that high. The only other thing I can think is that the IHS (Intregarated Heat Spreader) on the Quad must be concave or convex and thus not allowing for much surface contact or just not sufficient surface contact to your heatsink.

Sorry I can't be anymore help than that.

Guys...........

I know I should post this in a general forum but you guys have been so responsive I thought I might just ask a regular pro-tools question. I have a weird problem in a session that might have occurred accidently but I don't know how to undo it.

I started a session with several Midi and instrument tracks running Stylus RMX, Trilogy, and a Scarbee EP as virtual instruments. Somewhere along the way after dragging and dropping some Midi files in from Stylus....I went to record some baselines on Trilogy. I record enabled the track, hit record on the transport, then play....but nothing recorded. I noticed that every time I'd start play...the record button on the transport would go off....and all I would do is play back the track and not be able to record to it. I tried to do the same thing on the other virtual instrument tracks and the same thing...

So I opened a new session and inserted the same tracks....and attempted to start recording and voila....record enabled the tracks, hit record...then play and everything started recording. Went back to the other session and still no recording. I either clicked something by accident and don't know how to undo it. Or the session got corrupted some how and it's not responding.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

blade nailed it. The only thing I can think of is the CPU is more concaved or convex than normal. (thay all are to a certain degree. especially the Intel Conroe chips being concaved.)

All info I've found so far contradicts the Krogoth255 guy on New Egg. Matter of fact, I've found quite the opposite. Some applications like SpeedFan read the temp incorrectly. (by 10c - 15c too low) Coretemp should be givng you an accurate reading. Right now at idle with my case fans in silent mode which are pushing hardly any air, my temps are 47, 48, 47, 45, and that's at a 3ghz overclock. And I plan on that being lower once I install this new heat sink. (currently using the Scythe Ninja Plus REV B with one fan)

Do you have cpu-z? I'd be interested to see what your voltage core is according to cpu-z. Mine is 1.264. Mine was much higher when set to auto in the bios, and temps did rise. But not to the extent yours are at. In any case, I'd say there is a good chance there is a problem with the CPU, not that I'm an expert though.

Can you post your core voltage, multipler, FSB Bios settings etc.? I'd be interested in overclocking to 3GHz but I'm a little wary of playing with the core voltages etc without some guidance.

Thanks.
