Default I want a control surface.

Hey guys!

I am running pro tools 10.3.2 with the CPTK on OSX 10.8.0 and am wanting a new control surface. Budget is the main determining factor.

My two options are the Digi 002 faderpack or the Command|8. I don't necessarily need the interface attached to the device, but I don't mind having it. On the used market they go for around the same price and idk what are the advantages or disadvantages from either setup since I'm not running a TDM system and no new thread relevant to Pro Tools 10 has come out comparing the two.

This is also for my home setup, since we will have a pro control in our studio, so footprint is important, but both controllers fit my space requirements.

A little help because I don't really get the difference between the two devices once you step away from hardware DSP.

Thanks,
Min

The control surface version of the 002 and the Command8 are very similer in features and functions.

The Command8 is not a audio or Pro Tools interface. The 002 is. The Command 8 will work with Pro Tools systems other then PTLE EG HD. You cannot (as far as I know) use a 002 as a Control Surface with Pro Tools HD.

I find the C|8 ergonomics/functionality slightly improved over the 002. Also it's quite portable, which is nice when you do a gig to a studio where there is no controller. If you can find one dirt cheap...

On the other hand, (buggy) used Artist Mix and Control units are starting to show up at ok prices. I'm personnally not very found of them.

I also read that the command|8 works with other DAW's, is that true? I also compose in Logic, but don't necessarily need the control surface functions.

Also, can I use my novation control and the command|8 together? I read on sound on sounds page that only the command 8 will function and my other midi controllers won't.

Thanks for the help!

The C|8 only works with PT.

I'm not clear if it will work together with a midi/HUI controller. The 002 did (within certain limits).

If you own an ipad, you might also consider Neyrinck V-Control Pro. It's brilliant.

A used Pro-Control probably makes the most powerful PT dedicated controller but it might well stop working with PT11 (same with the C|8|24 btw).

Sorry if this has been discussed.

But is the Command|8 working with Pro Tools 10 and 11?

Thanks

10? Probably. 11? Probably not. In any case, if the Artist controllers are not your cup of tea, I would suggest the 003 controller. Much better than the 002 in every respect, and it DOES work with PT 9/10/11(regular or HD software). You might even find enough of what you need in the little Presonus Faderport

Check for old Mackie HUI, it works both PT and Logic..built like a tank. Just my 5 cents.

I think the C|8 works with PT11 - I seem to remember seeing a post on the duc about AVID breaking PT11 compatibility for ProControl and Control24 but keeping the C|8 alive beyond PT10.
