Yes, a 2nd gen (black) iLok is a system requirement. It says so on the same page as where you registered for the free trial.

First doesn't need an iLok
given that most 3rd party PI/VI makers use iLok as their copy protection method it's hard to say you shouldn't have one (Slate Digital usually has a deal that they send you a free one with some plug-ins)
