Count me in the group who thinks speed has little to do with music. Dwayne Allman, Clapton, Albert Lee, Tony Rice, Doc Watson and Brent Mason are/were all fast, but, they have soul. They can make goose bumps rise on my arms, and almost bring tears to my eyes. How?, phrasing, melody, tone, harmony, and yes some speed, but not for speed's sake, they always make it fit the song, and they play slow so well when that is required.

So does this guy. It gets to a point where it's all noise with no definition - he's not even trying to articulate notes, just slide through them. As someone's hinted, let's see how well he plays on an acoustic or at least clean with no compression...

Speed for speed's sake is all fine and dandy if you're 15. Once you actually learn how to play MUSIC, and not just how to play a bunch of really fast notes on your guitar, you realize that speed means nothing.

It's is astounding and quite an accomplishment. I wouldn't pay a dime to see it live and surely wouldn't listen to it. His speed is outstanding. And he has practiced many many hours to achieve this speed. But it is a side show kind of thing and not what I go looking for when I think of music and musicality. Certainly do like a good well placed shred so don't get me wrong and in no way would I try to overshadow his accomplishment it truly is quite a feat!!

This mans focus was on setting a speed record and you folks are preoccupied with the fact that it's not soulful and musical...comparing him to clapton and other guitar greats......LMAO!!!!

You know nothing about this man other than what is in that article...he could be the most tasteful guitarist around when he wants to be.

OMG this guy can play FOTBB at 90000bpm he must have no melodic phrasing at any other time...and I saw his soul fly right outta the headstock in shame!!!!

More power to this guy.

That's not quite right. I wasn't talking about soulful. I was talking about something completely different. I really like this piece of music and like to play the beginning of this piece from some tab I found years ago - because that's all I could find. I used to play a computer game that has this tune in it, and have different recordings of it on violin, guitar and other. But at this speed I found listening to it quite unpleasant. I was listening to the piece from a perspective of someone who knows the entire song very well, but play only play a portion of it. And I found it very 'disjointed' for lack of a better word, the flow of the chromatics was lost. It was like he was at one section then in less than in 1/2 second 20 notes had flown by and he was at another section and again and again. The ear is continually trying to play catch up, and for me it was unpleasant, the 'music' was gone.

I compared this scenario to what blues musicians might've felt when Yngwie burst onto the scene, maybe they felt at (only) 15+ notes per second, they may have felt that same disjointedness. Though at a less degree as they were still fast violin/piano players. Oscar Peterson springs to mind as does Yehudi Menuhin.

The question to me becomes, at what speed does a piece of music become unmusical? And I think I have an answer.

Lol he's not trying to be musical he's trying to break/set a picking record. For people who are into that thing, the flight o da beeswax is just popular tune to dookie on, can't get too deep with these things. Hot dog contests aren't about savoring the flavor if you know what I mean...some people are just driven to the extreme, and as far as records go ....alternate picking is cooler than, say, pogo stick jumping lol.

We are all brothers and sisters of the six string here, respect those different then you, who may have different goals, and quit the bashing.
