What is Current 003 Firmware Version?

If I put the 003 console into load firmware mode, launch Pro Tools, and there's no message, it just launches, does that tell me I have the most current firmware already?

I would say yes. My own 003(now in the closet) ran fine all the way up to 11 and I have not had it ask for a firmware update since all the way back to PT9 Is it acting odd? I know the shuttle wheel has been broken since PT10(and is not likely to get a fix) but I never used it myself. The rest of the surface worked fine, but I moved up to HD/Native to increase my IO capability.

Why are you putting it in firmware mode is probably the real question.

The software ask you to deal with firmware when necessary, forcing it into firmware mode is a troubleshooting aspect.

You should look into your FW drivers and system settings.
If that doesn't make a difference then look into it being a problem with your 003.

Is this a system that developed the problem or a new setup?

It's looking like this might be an issue with my switching the Windows default audio device setting... which I do frequently.

For general Windows use, I'll often use the 003 set as default audio device.

But Pro Tools needs for 003 to NOT be set in Windows as the default audio device, for it to run correctly.

Switching back and forth I believe, is what is causing the occasional connectivity issue described above; simply re-choosing the Windows default audio device which I set before running Pro Tools, and then re-launching Pro Tools, seems to solve the issue for me.

FWIW, my midi room setup uses an 003 on an identical computer as below. About 2 months ago, the surface went completely unresponsive(audio would still pass in both directions). If I swapped FW drivers, it would work for a few minutes, then go dead again. I tested on a backup computer and it worked fine. Replacing the FW card with a new one has solved this issue.
