Default HD Native PCI w/o Omni?

A few years back I bought a new OMNI and HD Native setup.

The OMNI's front panel inputs stopped working some time ago. Will the HD Native card be of any use (increase plug-in capacity) with a generic USB interface?

On further thought, the fact that the OMNI and PCI card are connected by a data cable, makes me think one won't work w/o the other.

That is correct. The PCIe card is useless without an HD interface hooked up to it. It can not be selected as an interface.

You may be able to find a used Omni on Ebay or on the forums here. There's also the Focusrite Red interfaces which have Digilink connections as well.

... or if you are on a limited budget, the old blue DigiDesign branded interfaces are also still working well

We use "old" Lynx Auroras with HDN cards.
A million times better than Omni. Never had one stop working either.

No HD Native card (or thunderbolt box) increases plug-in capacity.

They are all still running their plugins on the host computer CPU. Only HDX cards do processing of AAX-DSP plugins.

There's now plenty of debate if HDX is a hinderance now (and host CPU the better choice for all things) in other threads but just wanted to clarify what an HD Native card/thunderbolt box can and can't do.
