I have plenty of external hard drive estate, but I like keeping local copies in addition to external copies. Of course, I'm starting to get now that PT is designed differently from other DAWs in that it's explicitly intended to be run mostly externally, so that's just something that I may have to get used to.

Cheers.
If you want to keep a local copy as a backup (which would be the only reason to have another copy) keep it on an external drive separate from your session copy which is also on another external hard drive.

Yup you're going to have to get used to the way PT works. A lot of people make the mistake of thinking they can run and use PT like they would any other daw.
