Default Pro Tools|24 vs. 001

So, I know that on paper it should be no brainer, but here is my dilema: I have 001 and looking to make the next step, getting PT|24 /if i had the budget i would defenitely go for Mix+/. I know it is a TDM system and all, but based on stats and experience, what is the maximum track/plug-in ratio that you guys have pulled out from the d24 and 1 DSP Farm cards. I know everything is upgradeable and all and later on i can get more Farms or trade, i guess i'm just interested in opinions.

Check out the 002. It is pretty cool as well. It gives you a higher sample rate than the 002, and I think even higher than the MIX but I am not sure about that. It comes with tons of Plug Ins too. You are limited to just 32 tracks though since you can't ever add anymore.

I know a usual session on 001/PC 2.4Ghz (32Tracks+too many plugs) gets the mixplus full.

but don't worry.. you can use RTAS when you don't need the plugs on realtime input so you get greater power.

At this point, unless you can get a screaming deal I probably wouldn't bother with the D24 system...you can probably get similar perfomance with an LE system on a fast computer, and the LE systems are still being developed...you'll have a harder and harder time as time goes on finding plugins for the D24.

I have also pondered this dilema.
mix or a faster computer.
Thee digi manual lists expected plugin numbers from both, as its a bit old now and I have a faster machine I am getting similar performance as a mix, the problem and main advantage I believe would be the old latency issue.
This is where mix kicks the 001, however the cost here is nearly 5 times more expensive for the mix system with interface and you should ask yourself, is the mix 5 times better than the 001 or is a bigger machine going to be better.

In the past the mix would be best beyond doubt, but now, well...
you decide.
Ide go for the next mac with better outboard stuff.

Just a thought.

I just upgraded from digi 001 to Mix. I will agree that you should hold out for Mix over a D24/vintage farm combo or you will be disappointed. That said, latency is not the only advantage, TDM takes care of all the mixing, etc. leaving your CPU free to run more RTAS plug-ins without compromising screen redraws/general operation. It does take a little getting used to managing dsp efficiently, but this upgrade has prolonged the life of my computer quite a bit. Also room for future expansion is a big plus--when I need more dsp I can buy a vintage farm or mix farm, these will allow me to add more interfaces, etc., etc. All without worrying if my new computer will be compatible.
good luck deciding.
