Excited about/planning to get an SSD drive?
SSD (Solid-State Drives) have been coming on lately, as evidenced by the 64GB SSD option in the new MacBook Air (though pricey). Everyone was excited about Samsung claiming it would have a 128GB SSD drive out in Q3.. but then Intel up and says it will have a 160GB SSD drive out in Q2. Samsung then countered by saying it would have a 255GB drive by end of year.
So, it looks like 2008 might be the year of the SSD. That said, it anyone planning on getting one as soon as the prices are within reach? I guess my main/follow-up question would be if a second drive for audio recording would still be warranted since I always heard the primary one (when HDD) would be busy moving it's needle around doing OS stuff and you didn't want to compete with that. So, if you're looking forward to having an SSD drive (faster, less heat, less noise, less battery drain, no moving parts), do you plan to: 1) keep your HDD as primary drive for OS stuff and eventually get an external SSD drive for audio recording 2) get 2 SSD drives, one for OS, one for recording -or- 3) get one SSD drive because recording to a separate drive from OS will no longer be necessary Thanks for any feedback. I'm just really curious to hear what others are thinking. Ron

3 is out do to safety concerns, I have seen what happens when one records to the System drive, a hiccups happens and Pro Tools writes over the system folder (system goes by-by)

Re: Excited about/planning to get an SSD drive?
I would vote for "2" also, mainly as a risk mitigation measure. And it goes without saying that you'd still need redundancy in case of drive failure. Maybe old HDDs could be used for backup. But yeah, it's an exciting new option. Computer equipment is improving so quickly and dramatically these days, it's hard to keep up. "State of the art" doesn't stand still long enough to be "state of the art" anymore. It's great.
