Default 003 rack not connecting

This may be simple mistake on my part but I can't connect to my 003 rack. It worked fine before but now it won't sync to my computer. I was wondering if there is a system reset on the rack itself. I'm pretty sure the only thing I've done differently was updating the Pro Tools software. I'm using OS X 10.4.11 and Windows XP Pro. I can't connect to either OS. I'm really green with Pro Tools too, so I may have done something foolish along the way.

Any tips or suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Try a new firewire cable as the factory cable is a cheapo. If you open (on the windows machine)Control Panel>SYSTEM>Device Manager, is the 003 seen as an attached device(with it powered on)?

I'm using the same cable I used before. It's not the original and it's only 5 or 6 feet long. It's not showing up in device manager. The Host light isn't lit either. I've tried both firewire ports on the rack and my PC. Just doesn't show up. I powered up properly, although I'm not sure how important that really is. I did turn the rack on after the computer was already on a while ago. Could that screw something up?

Have you tried looking at the System Profiler/Firewire tab? The profiler is found in the Applications/Utilities directory.

This will tell you if the Mac can see the 003. It will also tell you what else is using FireWire. I would disconnect all other FireWire devices and power cycle again.

I was told by Digi that disconnecting the 003 from the computer is really the only dangerous thing you can do regarding connecting/disconnecting so , yes, powering things up in the wrong order can be bad.

Which model Mac are you running?

Is the 'Link' light between the firewire ports on the 003 lighting up? If not - you may have a blown firewire port. Did you possible connect or disconnect the 003 while either the 003 or the computer were turned on?
