003 with Thunderbolt Adapter - Toasts adapter?

I am in a university setting. We have recently done two installs of PT11.3.1 on MacMinis with i7 processors and 8GB RAM. We also have legacy Digidesign 003 surfaces. The new MacMinis have no FW ports; so we are using with Apple-branded Thunderbolt to FW adapters.

Initially, this configuration worked well. However, after a few sessions, we began having problems. Device would not always latch-up (i.e., I/O worked, but not fader control) and then became totally inoperative. After a significant amount of troubleshooting, we have traced the issue to TB to FW adapter failures. Seem to have toasted 3 so far, and also a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter. FYI, we tried reconnecting one of the 003s to the old WinXP computers removed from service (PT8) and it worked fine.

Is this in any way a power-related issue with the 003??? The Thunderbolt bus on the MacMinis seems to still be functional (and the Apple Hardware Diagnostic tool returns no hardware errors, with or without the 003s connected).

Any insight or suggestion much appreciated. Is there another way to use the 003s with MacMini? Have tried daisy-chaining off of a Glyph 2TB drive that is connected via USB3, but device does not latch up (we actually tried this before using the Thunderbolt adapters).
