SC48 with new MacBook Pro late 2016 Thunderbolt 3 ports no FireWire adapter
As the title says, new MacBook Pro (late 2016) has the new USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 socket, and apple does NOT have a TB3>FireWire adapter available.
We use our SC48's for multitrack recording and our current MacBooks are in dire need of replacement. Buying an older model is NOT an option, we need to upgrade to the most current version of MacBooks to ensure longevity. Please no posts about anything other than a direct work around to get an SC48 working on the newest MBP models. |

What about the Thunderbolt 3 -> Thunderbolt adapter?
So you could use your old adapter Thunderbolt->FireWire. http://www.apple.com/de/shop/product...bolt-2-adapter Cannot check it myself, but maybe it works |

How ridiculous Apple workarounds have become Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, Thunderbolt 2 to Firewire 800 adapter, Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 cable, all because every year they change something somewhere. |

Re: SC48 with new MacBook Pro late 2016 Thunderbolt 3 ports no FireWire adapter
Did daisy chaining the adapters work??? I'm in a similar situation where I have the Macbook Pro 2016 with an MBox 3... I have a Firewire 800-to-400 cable but was curious if an adapter has been created for Firewire-to-Thunderbolt 3/USB-C, or is daisy chaining the best option... Thanks...

Re: SC48 with new MacBook Pro late 2016 Thunderbolt 3 ports no FireWire adapter
Works...
I can happily report that using adapters does indeed work. I haven't tested it exhaustively (I was using this rig for a gig and under the gun) but I didn't have any problems over 16 hours. MacBook Pro 13" i7, 16GB of RAM (yes, special config) USB-C - Thunderbolt 2 adapter ->Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter -> FireWire 800 to 400 cable (that came with my older LaCie Drive) to SC48. Using Pro Tools 12.7, no issues. Cheers, - ZinMkr |

Daisy Chaining adapters does work, yeah it's an ASBURD workaround, but it does get the job done.

Re: SC48 with new MacBook Pro late 2016 Thunderbolt 3 ports no FireWire adapter
Before I mention this working, I've reached out to Anker (small electronics company) about the small niche market that might be viable for them in making this adapter, and they seemed quite open to suggestions, so I suggest anyone reading this to send an email asking them for a USB-C to FireWire adapter.
I added in that a USB-C to FireWire 800 with 3 USB ports for our iLok's, Waves dongles, etc, which would be the perfect item for people like us. http://www.anker.com [email protected] So like others, just reposting to confirm the multiple adapter trick DOES work. Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter into Thunderbolt 2 to FireWire 800 adapter into FireWire 800 to 400 cable into SC48 Works fine, but very sketchy setup considering all the connections being made. I've gaff taped the 'ish out of the connections as a precaution for show time. |
