Default 003: Optical I/O at 24/96?

Is it the case that the 003 interfaces accept optical I/O only at 44 & 48 KHz?

My goal is to transmit 2 or more channels of audio at 96KHz using a Lucid 88192 interface. I am told by my dealer that the 003 interface family will permit a maximum sr of 48KHz when using optical I/O. The dealer explains that the only means of getting 96Khz audio into a laptop-based PT system is to use the M-Powered Pro Tools version, and the M-Audio interface, and that a four channel limit would exist at the high 96 sr. I'm further told that Pro Tools M-Powered and Pro Tools LE can exist on the same Mac OSX laptop.

Thanks for any help. I come from the backgrounds of PT HD and LE M-Box, so this is new.

This is true. You can get 2 ch of 96khz via the coax spdif connector..

I don't know about the M-Audio stuff

The 002-003 interfaces will do 2 channels of 96K over the optical connector if it is set to S/Pdif.

But--the Lucid doesn't do optical S/Pdif--only ADAT and it uses SMUX which Digi interfaces don't support.

In theory, a M-audio interface that supports SMUX will input 4 channels at 96 over a single optical connector. 8 channels SMUX requires two optical connectors. I don't know how the M-Audio interfaces show up in the software--that's why I say "in theory".

At 96kHz, it is recommended that you use
the S/PDIF (RCA) port
I read this in the 003 getting started guide and just filed it away as "no 96khz over optical". Digi does not explain why they are making this recommendation.

Thanks for this input, everyone. This corresponds to my dealer's comments as well. I'm a little disappointed that we're limited to four inputs, and have to go the M-Powered route to do it.

You can get all 8 inputs @ 96KHz via SMUX with the M-Audio Profire 2626, which is the interface you want. The Digi interfaces will not allow low-latency monitoring with outboard converters.

(Digi hates you and M-Audio alike. )
