Default Pro Tools 11 CPU usage issue

When I am using PT11 the CPU usage randomly jumps 10x of what is normal and only thing that helps is restarting pro tools itself.
The issue happens even if I don't load a session and just let pro tools idle.
It usually happens within an hour from opening pro tools.
  • Mid-2012 Macbook Pro 2.5Ghz i5
  • OSX 10.8 and 10.9
  • 4GB RAM
  • Happens with no peripherals attached, ilok plugged straight into the computer.
  • Pro tools running off the internal HDD

As for troubleshooting I have formatted my computer several times.
Both OSX 10.8 and 10.9 have been clean installs.
Issue has persisted on 11.0, 11.02, 11.03 and 11.1.
Pro tools 10 is not installed.

As per instructions from a different forum I tried to temporarily disable hyperthreading in OSX and it appeared to help the issue as it didn't happen as fast that way.

I've attached an image just to be safe aswell. There was no session loaded and pro tools was just idleing.

Move all 3rd party plugins to unused folder and try again. If it helps, move those 3rd plugins back one at a time and find out which one is giving you trouble.

There are no 3rd party plugins.
The problem happens even with a completely clean install, only OSX and PT11.

Then I'm afraid I have no other idea but that the i5 CPU is the problem Modern PT really loves i7 processor... Also, 4GB memory is not enough. It will run OSX nicely but for everything else you should install more. Consider 8GB minimum for using PT with most up-to-date software.

Hey guys - I have had the same issue as the OP since summertime. I started two threads - one got 2 others with the same problem the last got a nice note saying they would forward it along.

http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=346892
http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=345632

GS Thread - first post has a great screen shot - shows the issue well
http://www.gearslutz.com/board/pro-t...-overload.html

I was HOPING 11.1 and Mavericks would take care of it but apparently not so.

------- nutshell
- reports of this from all the posts I know ---
are from i5 MBP, MacPro, late 2013 imac, mac mini, AVID HDN, MOTU 828, Auroral 19 + AES card, Native, HD, USB3 external HD, All Thunderbolt drives, Hyperthreading on and off (though off helps), session running, no session running (PT open), 10.8.4, 10.9.1, 11.0.0 through 11.1, clean install of 10.8.4, 10.8.5 and 10.9.1 (only AVID plugs), 44.1, 96k, low buffer, high buffer, ilok in USB Hub, ilok directly in imac ---- I ran all day yesterday with HT OFF and didn't have a single occurrence. But if I put it on - within 30 minutes it will happen...

SO: What on earth is the common thread??
- Apparently it is not a unique hardware config
- Taking all plug ins out cancels 3rd party
- If it were a real PT11 flaw you would think it is much more widespread

Ideas I have had in the last 24 hours -
- It roughly coincides with my switch to ilok2 - Could there have been a flakey run of these??
- A problem with Mac USB ports on only some machines (though I had it on 4 macs in a row while choosing my imac)
- Could it be a stock Digi plug in?? But again why are we having the issue and most others not?
- Could it be happening and folks just not notice? - On a mini or Laptop the fans would definitely be ramping up - Mac pro or imac - unless you look at Activity monitor you may not see it -

..seems its simply RAM , you have 4 GB but PT11
needs 8 GB minimum ..
