Thanks. Can you use the onboard aax dsp for mixing (off loading pc cpu for resource hungry plugins) or is it only for tracking?

You can mix with it, but I don’t know why you would. The power of a modern computer will allow you to run waaaaay more plugins.

The beauty of Carbon, as mentioned above, is the one click drop a track into record with DSP and have virtually no latency. This hybrid engine is the perfect marriage between native and DSP.

Purchasing while under the influence of Vicks Nyquil

Probably means "full retail"

Yes, I'm pretty sure you can turn on the AAX DSP while mixing to offload CPU to the DSP. However, if you have native plugins on the same track(s), maybe some difficulty there.

And I cannot remember, maybe I'll try in a bit, can AAX DSP be used on Aux tracks? I think that could work as well.

Yeah, I meant 'cold' as in retail purchase without trade-in or selling something to offset cost. I suppose since the original post mentions the transition from Apollo to Carbon, it would be assumed that the Apollo gets sold, so maybe a bit over-explained.

Now, I'd like to insert a smile emoji. Here you go:

Great. It would be really nice to know how this works. Also when there is a mix of native and dsp plugins on a track.

Carbon can run AAX DSP plugins on all track types which support inserts. If a track is in DSP Mode, then Native-only plugins are automatically bypassed. This is done to preserve the low latency monitoring path.

If you want to use AAX DSP plugins for offloading mix processing, you have two options:
-Only use AAX DSP plugins on the track, so that all required processing can be active. Obviously, this may be too restrictive if the plugins you require don't have a DSP version.
-Bus source tracks to an Aux track in DSP Mode. This allows your source tracks to be in Native Mode, but requires you to select AAX DSP plugins for processing on the Aux track.

I'd also suggest watching this fantastic Carbon overview from Jeff Komar. There's a good explanation of the Hybrid Engine.

Great. Thanks.

So if I only use aax dsp plugins on all tracks Carbon will run the mixer offloading cmputer cpu just like with hdx?

That is correct. But: If your sessions grow bigger the mixer will take some DSP and you’ll only have eight instead of 18 on HDX. The concept is for recording while offloading plugs for mixing is possible but with limits.

So if I turn on Carbon DSP in PT it will handle all the mixing, routing, and aax dsp plugin duties on the track where it is turned on?

The way a work (arranging/porducing/mixing) It would be best to leave the CPU purely for VI's and always run all plugins on Carbons aax dsp to offload my CPU.
Any idea how big sessions I can run purely on the onboard DSP on Carbon befor it maxes out?
