Default Looping a recording

Interesting idea i had.

I do some guitar looping with pedals for live performances, and I'd like to try something like that for a live video with my band, while recording to a full PT session with a click/etc.

Would it be possible to do this?

For Example: after the count off, protools records 2 bars of some instrument playing something, then continually repeats those two bars back for the duration of the recording while recording normally on the other tracks. I don't want to record in loop mode, as we'd be recording a full song, and unwinding loop recording and piecing back together would just be a nightmare.

I'd like the live loop to be in sync with the click for the duration of the song. Any way to do this? (I might just be creaming here...)

I don't believe any of my external looper pedals will sync their loops to midi clock or anything like that unfortunately.

Thanks all!

Why not just create your loop and hit copy or duplicate until its as long(or longer)as you think you will need to be able to jam to?

You can use the Clip->Loop feature.
Looped clips repeat the source clip as many times as specified in the Clip Looping dialog.

i do not think PT can do this without stopping and starting why not use a looper pedal .. and record that to pro tools LIVE ..

the thing that might work is using Ableton LIVE .. setup the looping in there / locked to pro tools ..

Protools is a recording software, not a sequencer. To do what you want your u need a different piece of software, like Ableton.

Thanks guys -

An external looper pedal is my best option so far, and the one I probably will go with, unless looking into Ableton looks super attractive for some reason.

The main thing I'd need is the loop playback, but I'd also like to have a click running. Seems like an impossibility in PT.

For anyone following along at home, I figured out how to do this, although not 100% in protools.

Just need a MIDI track and a looper pedal that accepts midi CCs to start and stop the looper. Mine does (fractal audio ax8 has this capability, although I'm looping a recorded percussion loop, not guitar, so I'll need to mic/preamp/adapter into the ax8).

Just need to set up a midi track in PT with the appropriate CCs to trigger my external pedal. Good enough for me, loop and click will be in sync for the entire recording time.
