Substitute for Digi003

I posted this question in another forum, but I believe I should have posted here:

My Digi003 died a few days ago, got it checked locally and seems to be board issue. I basically have to either buy a used one through ebay ($300+) or buy a new interface. Any recommendations from you guys? I've been looking at the Focusrite Saffire Pro 26 or 40. I only need an interface to use protools since I use external preamps and converters. What about something like the Presonus FireStudio? Is the change relatively painless?

I currently own a Presonus 1818vsl (usb) which I use for live sounds with a laptop, but I'm not sure it would be more stable than a firewire connection.

While my 003 is still working well, I've been searching for a substitute. Focusrite is sending me a review copy of the Saffire PRO 26 and I will be looking at it as a replacement. However, the review probably won't be up for a couple of weeks. I'll let you know when it's live.

You might try the Presonus. Nothing to lose. It may work fine. USB is much better than it used to be.

Aside from that, the Focusrite units do seem to be the most popular replacements for the 002/003.

OnlineRock, how did the Saffire Pro 26 compare to your 003?
Oddly, I also have a 003 Rack and Presonus Audiobox 1818VSL that I'm looking to replace. A nice poster on these forums suggested a Saffire Pro 26 + Octopre mkII.
