Get the best computer you can for Protools. Protools is a very hardware intensive application in terms of the processor, memory, and the hard drive. A 1.5Ghz computer is pretty slow by today's standards. The G4 Macs are two generations old also. I can't tell you to spend more than you can on the computer but that is the reality of this application. It cost to do what Protools provides and even if it is just a hobby, consider well the necessary inventment before going forward. It is better to not get into digital recording than to get into it only to find out that you don't want to spend the money to keep it going. A slower PC like the ones you mentioned will only frustrate you.

Last time I worked on a friend's Pro Tools on a G4, doing something as simple as scooting a sound effect to match a video brought the poor thing to its KNEES! That was on version 5.7.....
I'm running 7.0 on a WIN XP 2.53GHZ P4, ASUS P4B mobo, 1024 mb ram and it does just fine, although the temptation to build a quadzilla is overwhelming....

if you were going to purchase a new computer what is your budget?

and it's possible your current system wouldn't even be compatible.

i just got my laptop back today from getting a new fan so in the mean time i was using my Dell Dimension 8200 2.4ghz 512mb ram and it's not horrible but it does drive me a little nut's performance wise.

I'm quite unbiased when it comes to mac/pc, but for god's sake do not buy a G4 or G5 now. No doubt every G4/G5 audio user has their Mac up for sale to get a Mac Pro. To switch to an old archetechture Mac for audio now would be the biggest mistake possible.
