Default Help with new ProTools Free installation please.

I have a AMD Athlon XP 2000+ system running an XP/Win98 SE dual boot, with a Soundblaster Audigy Platinum soundcard. I installed Free, everything went fine, but when I go to create a new session, the "create new session" dialog comes up, lets me type in a name, but the ok button does nothing. Not a lockup, but nothing happens. When I try to load the sample session, the program crashes. I have heard PC/ProTools horror stories, is there any advice, settings to check, etc that might help?

Thanks.

Default Re: Help with new ProTools Free installation please.

i had the same problem - here's how i fixed it:

my system:
dell dimension 4100
windows '98
intel pentium III processor
2 20 gb harddrives (maxtor&quantum fireball)

problem -
I had 2 hardrives connected as master/slave- when i'd try to set them with DMA enabled (by going to my computer > properties > device manager > disk drives)- something was funky with my drives - i would check dma but when my computer rebooted dma wasn't checked....turns out my drives were configured in ms-compatibility mode (a default "safe mode" when your drives aren't communicating properly) so my system was running slower (which i didn't even know) because the DMA (direct memory access) wasn't turned on -

and thats why pro tools free couldn't run

fix -
for some reason the storage driver that the dell dimension 4100 used to comunicate with master/slave drives was way outdated and wouldn't let the drives run at full ATA potential. I dug around on the dell service page and found the latest intel ultra ata storage driver for my computer- installed it and - like magic - my system runs faster and pro tools free opens in all its glory!
now if i look in my device manager at the disk drives they don't show the dma box because they default to it.

hope this helps
