16 Million bytes of RAM??? Oh no, these machines had 64,000, *IF* you had the advanced "e" model. The "+" had 32K. I wrote a strategy game, circa 1983, which consisted mainly of text along with some basic graphics that filled up every ounce of memory and it was only about 400 lines of code. That's all it could take. I did the same with a Commodore 64 a year later (also 64K). My family didn't have a typewriter at the time so I wrote a word processor program to help with an English paper and even that program (we didn't call them apps then) filled up the available RAM. In the computer's defense, my code was terribly inefficient. I'd built in a copy/paste function to assist with the paper but the way I was assigning the "copy" to memory was not well thought-out. But hey, I was only 11, and it was essentially Basic language.

Btw, BBSs were amazing at the time. The thought of connecting to another person's computer via the phone line and perusing or operating it remotely was just mind blowing. I still remember that very first time with a successful connection. The adrenaline rush.

Used to run 2 BBS systems on a 32k clone machine using DoubleDOS. The batch programs running on the backend to keep it going, mind boggling. 2 Hayes modems (2400 bits per second)… hot stove (or CPU in this case) league stuff.

Mid 1980s, microVAX II, BSD 4.2, SMTP and USENET host on ACSnet (Australian Computer Science network, a UUCP like WAN system running on very slow leased lines, user access to that system was via serial line terminals in our university department). The MicroVAX II likely had 16 or 32 MB in it over time. As grad student I lept for the chance to polish my UNIX skills and administer the departmental system. Ended up spending decades working for UNIX systems vendors.

Yep, installed, supported sunOS and Solaris machines for a couple of decades, after working on MVS/OS390, VM, AS400 (Iseries) in mid 80s.

Yeah, after 52 pages it's a nice break to hear how others dealt with their rudimentary systems in the earliest of days, as a reference for how things have progressed and a reminder for how lucky we've become.
