Default IBM vs Western Digital Hard Drives

I have been contemplating adding a second IBM drive to my machine to use for audio tracks (probably the 120 GXP series), but I can't walk into a store locally and pick one up, like I can Western Digital or Maxtor. I remember reading about the high transfer rates of the IBM 60 series (which is my C:\ drive), but in light of the reliability issues with IBM (75 series, at least), I am wondering if it is worth mail ordering one, or if I should just pick up a 7200 RPM Western Digital drive.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, G.

Gingley,
I'm no expert on HD's, and I do know that WD is not considered the best. But, I bought a 40GB 7200 WD internal drive almost 2 years ago (at a great price), and it has worked like a champ ever since. No problems whatsoever.

the new WD drives with the 8mb cache are very fast and quite reliable.

We've had excellent results with IBM deskstars.

Hope this is helpful.

The Maxtor Diamondmax Plus series is also very quiet and reliable; does not have a funny nickname like 'deathstar'

I put a Maxtor in my 1394 audio drive for PTLE and an IBM in my GigaStudio for sample files. Both work great.

I haven't used a WD in a long time.

Take care,

Thanks for the link to storagereview.com, Mark. Their article on the Western Digital Special Edition 7200 RPM 80 Meg ATA 100 drive with 8 meg cache was very informative. In fact, based upon their results, I went ahead and ordered one. According to their tests, at least, it kicks the heck out of the 120GXP. Did you see the transfer rates on that puppy!

Thanks again for all the posts, G.
