Default The best workflow for Pro Tools

I'm about a year into PT 12 and have been searching for a good workflow process in addition to just mousing. I started out with mousing and the keyboard, then went to Quickeys (a keyboard shortcut program), then a Transport, then an Artist Control, and am now considering the Raven Slate touch screen. I don't have an automated console.

This is very subjective, but what do you think is the method of workflow for Pro Tools 12?

Mousing, keyboard only?
Mousing, keyboard with assisting shortcut software like Quickeys:
Mousing, keyboard, and a combination of an Artist Control, or a Transport?
Mousing, keyboard, automated console?
A Slate Raven?

Other options?

Keyboard, trackball and a D-Command has been a great experience for me.

I'd go computer keyboard, trackball (I use the Kensington Expert Mouse which is really a big trackball with 4 programmable buttons that can be chorded) and the new Presonus Faderport 8 for a controller. It's here: http://www.presonus.com/products/FaderPort-8

I would stay with wired connections for everything.

A lot of this is going to depend on what amount of space you have; don't underestimate the amount of space all these pieces of hardware will take up. It's not so much the actual space but also your physical comfort as well as how you can work without setting yourself up for things like neck and wrist pain later on.

Wow, two trackball users right away. How customizable are the buttons and scroll wheel on those?

i use a Quiet Mouse ,mostly, but have a Transport and also an Oxygen 49 and sometimes use the Buttons for Mute / Solo and the transport on that .. l do like the MC Transport Knob setup to scroll horizontally ..

also: i have the Pro Tools | Control on iPad but so far it is not set it up to be the only surface yet for me .. the lack of a Mix/Edit toggle on every screen is silly .. that is one of the main things we all do everyday all day long .. and Faders to Sends Flip is badly needed

so it is keyboard, transport, iPad, mouse for now ..

when i get third of reaching all over the place it is just left hand on keyboard and right on the mouse .. old school ..

Indeed. I have limited space, and could fit a keyboard and a trackball on a shelf between me and the console.

For years I used a bluetooth mouse/keyboard (computer is in a closet) and a DM-3200 as a control surface/monitoring.

I got sick of the larger console so I sold it and now I'm using a Command 8 and a mouse/keyboard. It's nice to have faders and knobs for some things but I don't miss them as much as I once did.

While some love the Kensington, I hate it. In fact, I dislike it so much, when I work on a friend's rig, I bring a mouse with me But, by all means, do try it as its certainly a personal preference, and it might be perfect for you. I've worked a long time with right hand on a mouse and left hand on the keyboard(learn those shortcuts!!!) and a little Presonus Faderport on my left(mostly for Transport control). Recently added Artist MIX and Transport to the setup, but still getting used to them(Faderport is still in play). Honestly, the best workflow is what is best for you

Another vote for the Kensington trackball, the one with programmable 4 buttons. I have the upper left button programmed for record, and the upper right button for playback.

Other than changing scroll speed and direction there's nothing else you can do with the scroll wheel. The buttons on the other hand are fairly programmable with one exception - whatever you program them for that works across all programs on the computer. IOW you can't program them for one set of functionality in say PT, another set in Excel, etc.
